It’s no secret that blockchain technology has transformed numerous industries significantly, and the gaming industry is no different. In fact, gaming can be considered as one of the areas that blockchain has had the most impact by transforming this culture en masse and empowering populations all over the world to engage in new experiences grounded in Metaverse platforms with cryptocurrencies, NFT’s and Play-to-Earn (P2E) built into their core.

The gaming industry, in general, is a massive market currently valued at over $170 billion and is expected to grow to $300 billion in the next five years. Now, with the emergence of blockchain systems and the Metaverse, this industry is being adapted in ways never seen before. Today, players of blockchain games are taking part in something much bigger than just playing computer games. They are interacting within systems that are geared towards wealth creation through the ownership of assets which can be held and traded, the possibilities of rewards, and an intricate system of payments powered by cryptocurrency transactions.

Leveraging blockchain technology in games brings a number of benefits to the table. In addition to monetary benefits and passive income streams for players that are provided through the use of DeFi and Smart Contract technologies, blockchain grants users the undeniable ownership of in-game items in the form of crypto tokens and NFTs. As there is a lot of value involved within such gaming environments, players are protected by the core principles of the blockchain, where all transactions are recorded and verified on an unchangeable and transparent ledger. This creates an atmosphere of trust between all of those involved in such games, including players, opponents, and creators. Moreover, blockchain systems are essentially creating new economic structures to benefit mankind worldwide. Today, gamers are incentivized to take part in gaming experiences powered by P2E, where they can even join clans of other players and pool together their wealth and assets to earn more collectively than if they played solo.

The P2E model has certainly flipped the gaming industry on its head and is fast becoming an industry-standard due to the fact that it has created a whole array of possibilities for players in terms of wealth creation. Today, you can already jump right into a blockchain game like Axie Infinity, The Sandbox, or Decentraland (to name a few), and start to buy, trade, and earn assets through your participation in the game, something that just was not possible before in the gaming space. In addition, by combining games with new technologies like AR and VR, which is already being explored as we speak, blockchain games are bound to become much more immersive experiences than they are today, allowing players to engage with them away from computer and mobile screens and on VR headsets.

There is no doubt a lot to look forward to as these gaming systems are still in their infancy. At Archipelago, we believe that blockchain gaming is going to be a big deal in the future and will impact the global population en masse with the development of Metaverse platforms that will not only be relevant for gamers but for individuals and businesses who will be able to interact in these newly constructed virtual worlds.
